About Me

 Hi. I’m Kalena Chan.  ( She/ Her)

As a young traveling Physical Therapist, I had the opportunity to meet  a group of midwives in Hawaii.  It was an experience that intrigued me, but also set a standard for me years later when I found myself in Massachusetts  pregnant with my daughter.  When I was researching birthing options,  I knew, as a new mom, that pregnancy isn’t a medical condition.  I opted to have a midwife and had a really good experience at the local birth center.  However, with my 2nd birth although I had a midwife , the birth took place at a Colorado hospital.   Although the birth experience was a good one, the hospital stay was not like the positive experience I had birth center. The post partum hospital stay was more of a medical experience and didn’t sit well with me .

I began seeing large gaps in the care of pregnant and post partum mothers.  Moms were not offered (and still to this day, not a lot better) many good solutions to their issues related to pregnancy and post partum.  Most moms were told by their doctors that it the issues would “ just go away after pregnancy” or “get better in time .”  My quest for knowledge and training led me to seek out answers and alternative treatments for helping with pelvic pain, bladder incontinence, pain during intercourse, pelvic organ prolapse, bloating, and return to post partum exercise amongst other things.

The more I began understanding these conditions, the more I came to know that mothers were underserved during these critical life experiences.  I believe that pelvic health, birth healing treatments, proper nutrition and  well timed exercise can help mothers achieve optimum performance in their bodies, as well as caring for your babies and children.   Mangostana is here to fill the gaps in care, to support moms, and to help you in these critical months and years.

Recently, I have treated nulliparous (have never given birth) young women with physical issues connected with pelvic pain and it is my passion to help prepare them for successful birth and educate them about their physical health, diet and cycles.

I’m also passionate in helping women going through perimenopause and have reached menopause.  Currently going through that process myself, I find that many women get dismissed by their medical practitioners when tests and treatments reach their limits.  There is help! Having a lifestyle change, dietary changes and proper integrative health tests can help you get your energy, sleep and mental clarity back.  It can be done and I’m here to help!

Bladder incontinence , pelvic pain, pain with sex, digestive issues are challenges we face during pregnancy and post partum, even years after . There is a lot of confusion and misinformation of what, when and how to help with these issues. Social media and the internet can sometimes make it even more confusing! I’m here to help de-mystify the explosion information, help you navigate and choose what’s most important to you. As a mom who has remained active throughout raising kids and beyond, I understand your desire to feel yourself as soon as you can. My passion is to get you back to your opti’mom’ self. Let’s work together.

For Fun: I love being outside! I mountain bike, rock climb, stand up paddle board, backpack and camp.

I’m a big fan of live music and called Meow Wolf my second home.

I’m also a born foodie- growing up in Malaysia.  Share your favorite restaurants and I’ll share mine!

I also love traveling and enjoy street food

My Skills

Over the last 10 years, I eagerly sought out skills that would give me the most efficient ways to help moms by combining conventional and unique approaches.  Some of these courses were through Herman and Wallace, extensive training with the Barral Institute (manual therapy which includes visceral, neural and vascular mobilization), Institute of Physical Art, certification in dry needling, courses in nutrition, certification for Integrative Health with Dr. Stephen Cabral.  I received my birth healing certification from the Institute of Birth Healing in 2020. I love helping moms return to their physical activities and exercise or to learn new ones.  My education in unique approaches to movement like Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization and Julie Wiebe’s treatment of the Female athlete provide me some of the skills to help with that.
