Andrew L McNett

OTR/L

is a Florida Licensed Occupational Therapist (OT), having graduated from the University of Florida in 2015. He's worked in a variety of clinical settings including hospitals, nursing homes, and home healthcare. Andy has been practicing CranioSacral Therapy (CST)—learned via the Upledger Institute—for over 8 years.

If you’ve just recently discovered CST then you've come to the right place! Many people are new to this form of therapy, and after their first session they are surprised at how beneficial and impactful just one session can be. CST has been shown to reduce and even eliminate the symptoms of a wide variety of health issues and dis-eases (see a list here). CST was developed in the 1970s by John E. Upledger, based on real science and research. Upledger is the original and authentic, evidence-based source of CST—accept no substitutes. Andy currently receives client referrals from neurologists, chiropractors, family physicians, and more. Walk-ins are also welcome at any time.

WHAT IS CranioSacral Therapy?

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing a person's overall function and health by decompressing and releasing restrictions of the bones, connective tissues, and structures of the head and spine. When these are returned to a more natural state, the entire nervous system (and body) has the opportunity to function more efficiently and with less pain or dysfunction. The flow of cerebrospinal fluid also improves and the central nervous system is more effectively nourished and protected. Any health issue related to the brain, orthopedic injury/disorder, or nervous system may be positively impacted by CST. This form of therapy is never forceful, and uses pressure no greater than 5 grams (the weight of a nickel) to achieve results.

The CranioSacral System consists of cerebrospinal fluid and its membranes that surround and support the brain and spinal cord. It extends from the head (cranium) down to the tailbone (sacrum), hence the name cranio-sacral. The nervous system is intricately connected throughout the rest of the body. Therefore, by helping the nervous system to function optimally and without restriction, any part of the human body (or bodily function) can be positively affected.

What To Expect During a CST Session

  • Sessions last about 60 minutes
  • Clients lie face-up, fully clothed on a comfortable, adjustable therapy/massage table, with soft music playing in the background
  • Deep relaxation is likely to occur during the session, as the nervous system is supported to expand and decompress.
  • Following a session, clients will often require extra rest and/or hydration as their body integrates any changes and continues the healing process.
The amount of sessions a client may need or benefit from is completely dependent upon their specific issue(s) or condition. Some clients require only one session to resolve the issue(s), while other clients may need more sessions. It is not uncommon for a person to receive 2-3 sessions within a month to address a specific issue, or to return periodically for a 'tune-up' of their overall function.
