About Me
Lauren Cato Robertson, MS, LMT, NCTMB has dedicated her career to understanding the intricacies of the human body, the role of dysfunction in the craniosacral and lymphatic systems on overall health, the effects of physical and emotional trauma on the development of dysfunction and disease, and the power of a gentle touch. She is the office clown and cheerleader, approaches each treatment from a place of unconditional love and understanding, and believes in the body’s ability to heal itself when we give it the opportunity. Lauren is president and co-founder of the C-Section Recovery Center, a teaching assistant for the Upledger and Chikly Health Institutes, holds a Masters of Science degree from Columbia University, and lives in McKinney, TX with her husband, Doug, and their two chihuahuas.
My Skills
Most people assume that because c-sections are performed every day, they are not a big deal. New mothers have an expectation that once a certain period of time has passed, once the scar has visibly closed, that they are “healed.” However, c-section births can be incredibly traumatic, both physically and emotionally. After the initial recovery period has passed, sometimes years later, many women will develop chronic conditions that are directly related to, but almost always dissociated from the c-section itself.
The C-Section Recovery Center has identified a predictable cluster of conditions that we attribute primarily to the combination of scar tissue adhesions, stagnant lymphatics, and emotional trauma that result from having a c-section. C-Section Recovery Therapy (CSRT), a hybrid of original and advanced massage therapy techniques developed in-house, addresses these primary issues and any associated compensatory patterns. We combine this hybrid hands-on approach with education on breathing techniques, proper hydration, nutrition, and exercise. By encouraging clients to continually remain curious, commit to and develop new aims and habits, measure their actions, and create consequential environments for themselves, participants in our program consistently achieve lasting and transformative results.
C-sections lead to a tight, thickened band of tissue across the pelvis that is created by the proliferation of scar tissue adhesions between skin, fat, muscle, and viscera that block vital pathways, resulting in stagnant fluids in the pelvis, inflammation, and pain. We refer to this phenomenon as “the tourniquet effect," and it is a universal result of any major surgery, really.
C-Section Recovery Therapy can be used to correct the problems we associate with c-sections at any age. We frequently see women whose most recent c-section was decades earlier, and achieve phenomenal improvements in the first visit in most cases. While we have a relatively standard treatment program, all of our programs are tailored to the needs of each individual client, and we employ a variety of skill sets and modalities to ensure our clients achieve their therapeutic goals.
For women who are pregnant or planning to conceive again, our treatment is an effective way to prepare for a VBAC or VBAmC. The Tourniquet Effect is a major factor in why pursuing a VBAC is both painful and frequently discouraged. Releasing this tourniquet effect results in more elastic, flexible tissue layers that are able to move independently of one another, which allows the uterus to drop into the pelvic bowl rather than being shoved up into the diaphragm and viscera, the end result being a more comfortable pregnancy and lower-risk, less painful birth.
