About Me

Joanna Donnelly, L.Ac., M.Ac.O.M., CVMP, ABT, worked in Sports Medicine as an athletic trainer and aquatic therapist at Portland State University 1993-98, then rehabilitated Oregon Ballet theatre dancers via Pilates 1998-2009. She completed her master's in Chinese Medicine and acupuncture in 2001, specializing in Tui Na and Shiatsu. Her love of Shiatsu was so great that she became certified through the AOBTA, the Association of Bodywork therapies of Asia in 2001, where she was first introduced to Jean-Pierre Barral's work through her mentor, Lindy Ferrigno, now known as Grandmother Winter Jade. Joanna took her first Barral Institute class in 2011 with Ron Marrioti, ND, and immediately fell in love with the work, which brought the teachings of Asian Medicine into her hands and much deeper into the relationships of all the organs and structures. Joanna has taken and retaken all Barral courses available and will continue to refresh and deepen her understanding of Jean-Pierre's teachings as a lifelong passion.
Joanna can be found hiking and paddling with her husband and their labradoodles.  Joanna's amazing kids are immersed in university, one is studying medicine at Chester Medical school and the other is pursuing law at Macalester Univeristy. When at her backyard in SW Portland, Joanna can be found pulling invasive species and planting native plants in the Tryon Creek watershed.  Joanna is an avid participant in the Irish dance community.

My Skills

Joanna's Chinese Medicine background provides excellent diagnosis and understanding of a pathogen's pathway and disease progression through the body. Whether a restriction has a traumatic origin, or pathogenic, or a combination, Joanna can assess with pulse and tongue diagnosis to prescribe herbal remedies. Joanna's current research on Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome (MALS) compares those afflicted with a congenital malformation of the arcuate ligament and those whose arcuate ligament became restricted after trauma.

Joanna's private practice is located inside Insights to Health, suite 302.  There is an elevator available.  2929 SW Multnomah Blvd, Portland, OR is just a minute off the Multnomah exit from I-5 South.  If coming from I-5 North, the Taylor's Ferry Rd. exit is preferred.
