Nancy Westphal began her career as a massage therapist as an apprentice at the Akiyama Institute in Oak Park, Ill. The majority of clients came for scar-tissue relief, particularly to recover from mastectomy surgery. Ms. Westphal was profoundly impressed with the rapid changes she saw taking place in pain levels, tissue regeneration and emotional healing when CranioSacral Therapy was used. Simply put, people had hope again.
Ms. Westphal went on to study CranioSacral Therapy through The Upledger Institute. She also explored color and sound therapy as well as Zero Balancing® before graduating from the Chicago School of Massage in 1997.
For the last decade, Ms. Westphal ran a thriving private practice in downtown Chicago. Her client base varied from newborns to the aged. In her spare time she volunteered in the special-care nursery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she cradled premature and high-risk babies.
Ms. Westphal joined the staff of UI HealthPlex Clinical Services full time in 2000. She is certified in both CranioSacral Therapy, Techniques level, and as a teaching assistant. She was also among the first participants in the dolphin-therapy project held at the Dolphin Research Center in Grassy Key, Fla.
