Craniosacral TherapistRICHARD HERSTEIN

I am a New York State licensed social worker and licensed massage therapist.

I have been passionate about practicing craniosacral therapy for over 15 years. I am a teaching assistant for workshops sponsored by the Upledger Institute for Craniosacral Therapy levels I and II and for SomatoEmotional Release levels I and II. As a mental health therapist, I was regularly drawn to the body, which I believe holds unresolved physical restrictions and emotional issues. Recognizing the influence that the mind and physical health have on one another, I attended the Swedish Institute for Massage, where I was introduced to craniosacral therapy and became committed to making it a core part of my practice. Since graduating from massage school, I have developed an integrated mind-body-spirit-energy approach to wellness.

I deeply care about the wellbeing of every patient. Whether patients come to reduce stress, high blood pressure, or pain; or to address mind-body challenges as they relate to “life growth,” my overall goal is that each person achieves the highest quality of health possible. My intention is non-judgmental and supportive of your journey toward the highest level of health possible. See conditions that I treat, below.

Testimonial: Richard has helped me effectively address long-standing physical and emotional issues in a remarkably short period of time. His deep understanding of how the body and mind work together enables him to be a very effective and holistic healer. On a scale from one to 10, Richard is an 11. D.B.

My skills

I integrate craniosacral therapy, body-emotional release, verbal dialogue, visceral manipulation, and acupressure to support the natural healing force and resilience within each of us. I believe that these “alternative” approaches to wellness in their own right can help people feel better, as well as support traditional western medical approaches.

Conditions in which I have a particular interest and that have responded well to my craniosacral therapy skills include: stress and tension; high blood pressure, migraines and headaches; depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD; TMJ dysfunction and pain; back pain; neck and shoulder pain; scoliosis; chronic fatigue; fibromyalgia; pulmonary or cerebral congestion; and sinus pain.

Based on our work together, patients may experience craniosacral therapy as a powerful force toward dramatic healing or as a gentle journey toward wellbeing. Regardless of the experience, I create a safe place where I listen carefully to each patient’s description of what brings them to craniosacral therapy. While sessions may be silent, I encourage patients to express what comes up for them both verbally and through their bodies. They typically describe me as non-judgmental, accepting, supportive, compassionate and encouraging.

Patients typically report that they feel relaxed after a session. Some patents feel complete or substantial relief after the first session, others begin to feel better after two sessions, while still others respond to treatment after a few weeks or months.
